Our Initiatives

Inclusive Development

Problem

We believe that “as goes California, so goes the nation.”  California has been a national leader in tech, climate change, and racial/social justice movements.  However, California is also leading the nation in racial displacement and homelessness escalation.  After decades of public and private disinvestment from cities, we are finally seeing resources and investments in urban areas but many of these efforts are done in ways that harm low-income communities of color.

SOLUTIONs

We believe it’s an imperative to invest in community-based development as the antidote to the current untenable situation of development with displacement.  Examples of our efforts include:

  • Anti-Displacement Plan for OakDOT’s East Oakland Mobility Action Plan where we bring long-time low income residents together to design anti-displacement strategies as an integral component to improving transportation and mobility in East Oakland.

  • East Oakland Black Culture Zone Collaborative which we co-incubated with EastSide Arts Alliance. This serves as a platform for East Oakland Black leaders and organizations to reimagine and determine the future of East Oakland.

  • Restorative Justice in Planning Analysis of 17 Los Angeles Neighborhoods for LA Department of Transportation’s Vision Zero Community Engagement that examines the racist history of planning in Los Angeles and connects the dots to today’s racial displacement crisis in Los Angeles’ Black, Latino, and Asian enclaves.  We also lift up concrete strategies that the LA Department of Transportation can do today to right the wrongs of planning history.

  • Oakland Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative that convened over 40 public, private, and community organizations to advance development without displacement in the nation’s most ethnically diverse corridor--Oakland’s International Blvd Corridor.  OSNI resulted in the creation of the BRT Business Mitigation Fund and City of Oakland and partner agencies’ investments in affordable housing, transportation, and economic development in East Oakland.
